Monique Hunter
Welcome. I’m glad you’re here. I’m Monique Hunter, a licensed, board certified clinical psychologist. I have spent my career supporting people with a variety of mental health needs. For many years, I have had the honor of helping people rediscover wellness, and these countless therapeutic relationships have taught me so much about who I am as a psychologist and a person.
If you are deciding whether you want to reach out to me, here are a few things you may want to know:
My Approach:
A guiding principle of my clinical work is that recovery is possible for everyone, even though it will look different from person to person. I partner with my clients in defining for themselves what recovery and mental health entail, and I lend my professional expertise to help them accomplish their goals.
I also believe in the importance of understanding and appreciating my clients’ worldviews and how their experiences have come to shape their perspectives. I recognize that, while we may have some experiences in common, there are things that I will not understand about any client unless I am open to learning about their experiences in the world. This humility is what allows me to work effectively with clients from various backgrounds and cultural identities.
I have years of training and practice based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). In general, this means that my approach to treating many mental health concerns focuses on the ways that our thoughts affect our behaviors, which in turn affect our emotions. Therefore, work with me often includes identifying ways that my clients’ thought patterns are related to the distress they are experiencing. My background in CBT is the root of my appreciation for evidence-based practices. This means that I pride myself on staying current on therapeutic interventions that are backed by scholarly research and utilizing these approaches when clinically appropriate.
It is also important for you to know that I believe in the importance of individualized care. No two people are the same, so no two clients should be offered a cookie-cutter approach to care. I believe in working with my clients to tailor treatment plans that address their unique needs, preferences, and goals.
Prioritizing individualized care to meet your needs as a person also means that I may not be the best fit for everyone. If I’m not the right therapist to help you accomplish your goals, I will help direct you to someone who can better serve you.
I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from The University of Georgia in 2006. I completed a predoctoral internship at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois and completed postdoctoral training at the VA Medical Centers in Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia. I became licensed as a psychologist in Georgia in 2008 (#PSY003181). I am board certified in Clinical Psychology.
I began working with the Atlanta VA Health Care System in 2007. I have held several roles at this facility, including working directly with Veterans as a therapist, as well as several program development and leadership positions. I have been trained in providing many evidence-based psychotherapies for conditions such as depression, anxiety, reactions to traumatic events, substance use disorders, and many others.
I believe in service to my community through my professional relationships and activities. I have held faculty appointments with the Emory University School of Medicine and Emory University School of Medicine for several years, supporting clinical training at each institution’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. I am a member of the American Psychological Association and Georgia Psychological Association and have held roles of leadership and service in both organizations.
